Project Gallery 2023

Secondary students from across Europe became exoplanet detectives with ESA and used Cheops satellite data to uncover the mysteries of two exoplanet targets: KELT-3b and TOI-560c.

TOI-560c

TOI-560c project description:

We started by introducing the term exoplanet. It was explained to us what and how we would count. We calculated size, orbital period and distance, volume and density one after the other. Using the table, we found out whether our planet is in the habitable zone. Based on the size of the planet, we estimated that it has an atmosphere.

TOI-560c Results and Analysis

We subtracted the depth of the exoplanet transit from the graph 0.15% then we calculate the size of exoplanet: r=17 392 km. Allesfitter gave us just slightly  different value.

From Allesfitter we obtained known value of the orbital period=18,8797 days of the TOI 560-c exoplanet and we use it for calculate the orbital distance.

d=18 690 894.588 km = 0,12 AU. The value of the other parameters we needed we found in the “case file”.

composition = light rock, granite like

…which we estimate from the density = 2,6 g/cm/cm/cm we calculate and using a “table” (in attachment nr. 1.) of known coposition and densities of Solar System worlds.

TOI-560c Conclusions

It is uninhabitable due to the high temperature and the absence of liquid water. We draw position of TOI 560c to the diagram where habitable zone around different type of stars is marked. And uninhabitability was confirmed. Attachment nr. 2.
