KELT-3b

KELT-3b project description:

Our small team met online on May 6 to uncover the mysteries of two exoplanets observed by the Cheops satellite. Students followed the guiding videos, with each step coming closer to understanding the KELT-3b exoplanet. They learned about the abundant class of hot Jupiters, giant gaseous planets orbiting close to their stars. A lengthy discussion followed each step. Perhaps not surprisingly, students were most excited and curious when we discussed the habitable zone. A valuable lesson was the process of numeric computation. They realized that knowing the equation is just half of the work. Putting together numbers and arriving at the correct result is just as important and anything but straightforward in the light of unit conversion. At the end of the project, the students were ready to tackle the second exoplanet (TOI-560c) by themselves.
